And what do I need to know when hiring one?
"Do I need a Day of Coordinator for my wedding?"
"What does a Day of Coordinator really do?"
"Should I leave those last-minute details to a family member or a trusted friend?"
Brides ask themselves these questions all of the time! It is so easy to misunderstand the amount of work that goes into planning every detail of a beautiful wedding.
WHAT IS A DAY OF COORDINATOR?
The title "Day of Coordinator" (DOC) leads most people to believe that a DOC is only available to them for the day of their ceremony and reception.
While it's true that a DOC can contract for only the wedding and the reception there is a significant amount of work that goes into preparing for a wedding happens well in advance!
Never hire a DOC who does not include some number of pre-event management hours into their contract.
Pre-event management allows a DOC to get vital information about your vision and the event itself. It can include (but is not limited to):
A walk-through with the couple and key vendors anywhere from 6 months to 45 days out from the date of the wedding.
Contact with key vendors before the event to ensure everyone knows where to be and when, especially in coordination with the venue's requirements.
Lastly, but most importantly, creation of the all-important timeline which serves as a key blueprint on the wedding day!
For reference, here at Farm & Fields our most basic Day of Coordination package includes a minimum of 7 hours pre-event management, in addition to 2-3 hours of rehearsal oversight, and 12 hours on the wedding day.
Knowing all of the above, should you hire a Day of Coordinator?
OUR SHORT ANSWER
Yes. You should hire a Day of Coordinator if possible.
We cannot recommend this enough (which is why we're repeating ourselves): When shopping for a DOC, make sure you have someone that has worked at least 6-7 hours of pre-event management into the contract. While paying attention to the price is important to keep the cost of the wedding on a budget it is equally important to get real value for your money!
